Neo-Mansard Monday in Lakewood’s Westgate Subdivision

IT’S NEO-MANSARD MONDAY!
The day no one asked for, and that everyone secretly loves. /—\

Another week gone by . . . and it looks like the heatwave is gonna break starting tomorrow - yay!

I grabbed a pic this morning of this 1969 neo-mansard two-story home in Lakewood’s Westgate subdivision, built by Witkin Homes in the late 1960s. While there are several examples of this model in the neighborhood, I specifically picked this one out for being pretty authentically original. While I don’t know if the paint colors are original, this home features:

  • Cedar shake shingles - the original spec, and something that is becoming increasingly rare because both insurance companies and building departments are pushing to end their use for fire danger reasons. It is otherwise a pretty durable roofing material with a long life expectancy, and is made relatively easy to maintain because individual shingles can be replaced when broken or worn.
  • The use of decorative panels accented with contrasting panel molding around the exterior windows and doors on the bottom floor. This bit of flair takes what would normally be an interior detail and puts it outside as a decorative detail . . . a classic late-’60s/early-’70s design gesture, and an original detail of this home. I wonder if the original garage door had some kind of panel molding design too?!
  • Double-door entrance - all the rage from the late 1960s through the 1970s.
  • Unpainted brick exterior on the lower level.
  • This is an earlier example of a neo-mansard
  • roof, which featured a low-slope hip roof on top that then transitioned into a mansard overhang, rather than the later examples where the mansard was more of an applied parapet around a flat roof.

This home is NOT presently offered for sale.

See all of the homes with neo-mansard roofs currently for sale in the Denver area (there are a lot more than you might think), right here on my website!

See you there!
